India took a major step toward making government services easier for everyone on Wednesday, as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) unveiled VoicERA, an open-source, end-to-end Voice AI stack, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026.
The move is expected to strengthen India’s Digital Public Infrastructure by enabling multilingual, voice-based citizen services. This includes helplines and scheme discovery platforms.
VoicERA is a complete Voice AI framework built to support speech-to-text, text-to-speech, conversational AI, and multilingual telephony. It has been deployed directly on the BHASHINI National Language Infrastructure, making it a national execution layer for Voice and Language AI.
For the common citizen, this is the biggest impact. With VoicERA integrated into BHASHINI, government departments can now deploy helplines and citizen services where people can avoid the struggle of English or Hindi-only systems. They will be able to speak in their own language and get responses in the same language.
This can be a major shift for people in regional India, elderly citizens, and anyone who finds digital systems difficult.
The launch was led by the Digital India BHASHINI Division, under the Digital India Corporation (MeitY). It was spearheaded by Amitabh Nag, CEO of the BHASHINI Division, in collaboration with EkStep Foundation, Centre for Open Source Software, IIIT Bengaluru, and AI4Bharat.
With VoicERA deployed on BHASHINI, India is pushing toward a future where citizens can access government services simply by speaking in their own language. From helplines and grievance redressal to scheme discovery and agriculture advisories, the BHASHINI + VoicERA combination could make public services more inclusive, faster, and far easier for crores of Indians.
