V.O. Chidambaranar Port at Thoothukudi handled its first crude palm oil vessel at the modified Coal Jetty-2 on Friday, as per The Hindu news report. The vessel, ZY Galaxy, carried 15,000 tonnes of crude palm oil from Port of Kunak in Malaysia.

The ship berthed at 10 am on Friday. The discharge of the full cargo is expected to be completed by Monday, according to the report citing a release issued by the port.

Pipeline Connects Jetty and Storage Tanks

Coal Jetty-2 has been modified to handle crude palm oil cargo. Pipelines have been installed from the berth to storage tanks situated around 5 km away from the jetty.

The arrangement allows the cargo to be transferred from the vessel to storage facilities located within the port area. This was the first crude palm oil vessel handled through the modified infrastructure at Coal Jetty-2.

Importer Has Storage and Refining Capacity

The shipment has been imported by KTV Health Food Private Limited. The company has set up four storage tanks in the port's industrial zone for handling the crude palm oil.

KTV Health Food has a manufacturing capacity of 1,000 tonnes of refined palmolein per day. The refined palmolein produced by the company is supplied for regional domestic consumption.

Seaport Services, Tuticorin, is the shipping agent for ZY Galaxy. The vessel's discharge operation is being carried out after its arrival at the port on Friday.

Land Allotted for Port-Based Industries

Separately, V.O. Chidambaranar Port has allotted around 1,633 acres of port land for industries based within the port area. The land has been allocated for sectors including power plants, chemicals, warehousing and food processing.

Other identified sectors include edible oil, green hydrogen, and its derivatives. The crude palm oil operation at Coal Jetty-2 comes alongside these industrial activities and facilities located on port land.
