Uttar Pradesh Government Approves Metro, Healthcare and Power Projects

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved several proposals related to transport, healthcare and local governance during its meeting on Monday, May 18, as per news reports.
The meeting was the first full cabinet session held after the recent expansion of the state ministry. The decisions included approvals for metro rail expansion, hospital infrastructure, power transmission projects and changes linked to OBC reservation in panchayat elections.
Lucknow and Agra Metro Projects
The cabinet approved the expansion of the Lucknow Metro, including the Charbagh-Basant Kunj corridor and the East-West corridor memorandum of understanding.
The proposed expansion is to improve public transport access in southern parts of Lucknow. Officials also cleared proposals linked to the East-West corridor under the metro project.
In Agra, the cabinet approved land transfer for Corridor-2 of the Agra Metro. The approval is required for station construction and viaduct work under the next phase of the project.
Hospital Infrastructure and Stipend Increase
The cabinet cleared the construction of a 1,010-bed super-speciality emergency centre at the Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.
Expansion plans for Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital were also approved during the meeting.
Separately, the state government increased the monthly internship stipend for veterinary students from ₹4,000 to ₹12,000. The revised amount will apply to veterinary interns undergoing training in the state.
OBC Reservation Panel and Other Decisions
The cabinet approved the formation of a Dedicated Backward Classes Commission to study reservation for Other Backward Classes in panchayat elections.
The proposed commission will review representation of backward classes at the panchayat level and prepare a fresh reservation framework.
Other decisions included implementation of the UP Birth-Death Registration Rules, 2026, amendments linked to Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission regulations, and approval for a pooling substation and transmission line projects in Mirzapur.
