The Uttar Pradesh government has cleared a proposal for a thermal power expansion project in Prayagraj district involving an investment of nearly ₹33,000 crore, as per news reports.

The project, Meja Stage II, will add 2,400 megawatt (MW) of generation capacity through three units of 800 Mw each.

The project is planned as a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam, with both entities holding equal stakes. The investment is expected to be spread over the next 5 years.

Proposal Awaits Cabinet Nod

The proposal has already been cleared by the state energy task force. It will now be placed before the cabinet headed by CM Yogi Adityanath for final approval.

The existing Meja Stage I project, which has two units of 660 Mw each, is operational. Earlier, NTPC’s board approved additional equity support of around ₹3,173 crore for the second phase of the project.

Demand Expected to Rise

Uttar Pradesh is preparing for higher electricity consumption during the summer months. State estimates show power demand could reach 33,375 MW in June 2026, while the government has drawn up plans to maintain the availability of around 34,000 MW.

According to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, around 80% of peak-hour demand is expected to be met through long-term agreements already signed by the state.

The remaining requirement may be met through purchases on power trading platforms such as Indian Energy Exchange, Power Exchange India Limited and Hindustan Power Exchange.

Solar Capacity Also Increasing

Alongside thermal power expansion, the state government is continuing work on renewable energy projects. Speaking at the UP-Energy Expo 2026, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said more than 52,000 solar plants were installed in April.

The state has also reported installation of over 4.8 lakh rooftop solar systems across 75 districts under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana.

Conclusion

The proposed Meja Stage II project is expected to add 2,400 MW of thermal power capacity as Uttar Pradesh prepares for rising electricity demand in the coming years.
