US Imposes Visa Restrictions on Indian Travel Agents Aiding Illegal Entry

The United States has imposed visa restrictions on Indian travel agents and agency executives allegedly involved in facilitating illegal immigration through Central and Latin American routes. The move follows a surge in Indians being apprehended at US borders and highlights Washington’s renewed crackdown on human smuggling networks. 

Visa Restrictions Target Indian Travel Facilitators 

On May 19, 2025, the US Department of State announced visa restrictions on owners, executives, and senior officials of several India-based travel agencies. The US cited their role in “knowingly facilitating illegal immigration to the United States” as the basis for the action, invoking the Immigration and Nationality Act. The restrictions apply even to individuals eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. 

The US Embassy and Consulates in India, along with the Diplomatic Security Service, are actively identifying such offenders. 

Sharp Rise in Indian Illegal Entries Raises Alarm 

The move comes amid a dramatic spike in Indians attempting to cross into the US using unauthorised routes. In FY2024, over 96,000 Indian nationals were detained at the US-Mexico border, according to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Nearly 44,000 were caught at the US-Canada border. 

A large number of these migrants are said to be victims of fraudulent promises by illegal agents, especially from Punjab, Gujarat, Haryana, and parts of South India. According to reports, some migrants pay up to ₹80 lakh for package routes that include charter flights, overland travel, and fabricated asylum claims. 

Who Is Affected by the Visa Ban? 

The visa curbs are aimed at Indian travel agents and firms that: 

• Offer or promote illegal migration schemes;
• Facilitate routes through Latin American countries;
• Mislead families with “guaranteed entry” promises;
• Have knowingly engaged in human smuggling networks. 

While the US has not named specific agencies yet, it warned that more designations may follow as investigations continue.
