US Eyes $500 Billion in Trade within Three Years with India

The United States wants to take its trade with India beyond $500 billion over the next three years, building on the record $240 billion reached between the two countries, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said at the Freedom 250 reception in Mumbai, as per news reports.
Gor said President Donald Trump had given him a clear mandate to deliver results, with both countries looking to expand their economic partnership beyond existing trade levels.
Semiconductors, Energy and Defence Among Key Areas
Gor identified semiconductors, critical minerals, energy, defence and superintelligence as important areas for future cooperation. He said the partnership already spans sectors ranging from deep-sea infrastructure and manufacturing to research, technology and commercial space exploration.
He also pointed to Mumbai's role in the relationship, noting that more than 500 major American companies operate in the city. These include Google, Meta, IBM, Pfizer, Abbott, Merck, Citi and JPMorgan Chase.
US-India Trade Agreement Framework
India and the US announced a framework for an interim trade agreement in February, aimed at improving market access and reducing trade barriers. The proposed arrangement covers sectors including textiles, leather, engineering goods and pharmaceuticals, with some tariff concessions dependent on the agreement's conclusion.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India's merchandise exports to the US stood at $87.31 billion in FY2025-26, while imports totalled $53.45 billion.
Officials Highlight Strategic Partnership
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the relationship as an important strategic alignment, while acknowledging that the two countries may not agree on every issue.
Rubio said more frequent diplomatic engagement could help both nations work together on shared priorities involving trade, commerce, economics and geopolitics.
