The banking sector in India witnessed a significant development as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) postponed the 3-day strike originally planned from September 28 to September 30, 2026, as per news report.

This postponement ensures that banks across the country continue their operations, much to the relief of customers and stakeholders.

Reasons Behind the Postponement

Initially, the UFBU had scheduled a nationwide strike following unmet demands outlined over 2.5 years ago. However, after receiving assurances from the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) regarding the review of crucial demands like a 5-day working week, the strike was deferred.

A committee comprising representatives from both the UFBU and the IBA will investigate the possibility of declaring all Saturdays as holidays.

Key Assurances and Discussion Points

As per news reports, IBA's assurances extended to addressing the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme applicable to officers of Scale IV and above. Further discussions will analyse possible changes to the PLI scheme, addressing concerns raised by unions.

Additionally, previous agreements from March 8, 2024, will be revisited to resolve outstanding issues.

Impact on Banking Operations

With the strike now deferred, banks will remain operational, ensuring no disruption in services during this critical half-yearly closing period.

This decision also eliminates the immediate threat of service delays, which had previously prompted certain banks to operate on Sundays.

Bank Unions' Initial Stance

The UFBU had taken a firm position, citing delayed implementation from a prior agreement as the primary cause for agitation. Union representatives highlighted the need for a 5-day banking week and revision of the PLI scheme, leading to this planned action.

The announcement of the strike had prompted advisories for customers to complete vital transactions early.

Conclusion

The postponement of the 3-day bank strike, initially scheduled for September 28-30, 2026, stems from IBA’s assurances to address key union demands. Banks will remain functional, particularly during this crucial period of half-yearly closing.
