India’s telecom regulator is preparing fresh consumer-facing upgrades across its complaint and network testing apps, including an appeal mechanism in the DND platform and a redesigned MyCall app for call-quality reporting, as per PTI report.

DND App to Add Appeal Escalation Feature

TRAI said it intends to introduce an in-app appeal facility that will allow users to escalate spam-related complaints if they are not satisfied with the response given by their telecom operator.

"In future, we will also incorporate an appeals feature so that a consumer who is not satisfied with the service provider's response can file an appeal through the app itself," TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti said. He did not specify a timeline for when the feature will go live.

The upgraded DND app, used for reporting spam calls and SMS, will support multiple languages. Lahoti said multilingual capability is crucial for adoption in rural and remote regions, and the new version will allow complaint filing in fewer steps, better preference controls and improved dual-SIM support.

He noted that more than half of all UCC complaints last year came via the DND app and added: "You can now know the name of your sender of a SMS header or a particular 1,600 series number from the app itself," Lahoti said.

Revamped MyCall and MySpeed Apps Rolled Out

The regulator will release a refreshed MyCall app in March that will let users directly submit complaints related to call quality and network experience.

TRAI has also introduced a new version of the MySpeed app with multilingual support and expanded testing features. "The revamped app is designed to test speeds obtainable with the 5G technology. Besides mobile connectivity, the consumer can also test speed obtained on fixed-line broadband or Wi-Fi," Lahoti said.

The updated MySpeed platform also includes a web portal for laptop-based testing and measures more than just speed. "The new app also enables testing of real-world usage conditions, i.e., video streaming and web browsing. Besides the speed and latency, the new app measures jitter and packet loss also," Lahoti said.
