The Government of India has announced the notification of the country’s first semiconductor fabrication facility, to be developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) by Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited.

The project is located in Dholera and is aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities in electronics manufacturing.

Project Overview

The proposed semiconductor fabrication unit will involve an investment of ₹91,000 crore, marking a significant step in India’s efforts to build a domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem.

The facility will be developed within a notified SEZ dedicated to electronic hardware, software, and IT-enabled services (IT/ITES).

Location and Scale

The SEZ will span approximately 66.166 hectares of land in Dholera.

The project is expected to generate employment for around 21,000 people, contributing to regional industrial development.

Policy Support and SEZ Framework

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the SEZ will include enabling infrastructure and a structured approval mechanism to facilitate operations and logistics.

The notification follows amendments made to SEZ rules in June 2025, aimed at encouraging semiconductor investments. Under the revised norms, the minimum land requirement for such SEZs was reduced from 50 hectares to 10 hectares, easing entry barriers for companies.
