Tamil Nadu’s TASMAC Implements Mandatory Digital Payments for Liquor Purchases Over ₹1,000

Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) will require digital payments for any retail liquor purchase exceeding ₹1,000 starting from November 1, 2026, as per news reports.
This decision reflects an effort to reduce cash handling and ensure transactions are transparent and efficient.
TASMAC's Shift Towards Digital Transactions
Currently operating 4,048 outlets, TASMAC aims to diminish the challenges tied to cash transactions, such as security risks and counterfeit money. These issues have made digital payments a more reliable option.
From November 1, 2026, digital payment methods including UPI, debit, and credit cards become obligatory for purchases above ₹1,000. Smaller purchases can still be settled in cash.
Employees' Payment Protocols
The corporation has instructed employees not to use personal QR codes, ensuring that all transactions are processed through official channels. Outlets are equipped with POS systems, and audits are set to verify compliance. Prominent signs will inform customers about this shift in payment policy.
Ensuring Compliance and Security
Outlet supervisors are tasked to issue physical bills only after verifying transactions via POS systems. This step intends to eliminate discrepancies and bolster operational surety. Additionally, district managers will oversee the auditing of POS machines to maintain seamless network connectivity for these transactions.
