The government of Tamil Nadu is set to launch a new initiative called 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam.' It offers a 1-gram gold ring to each newborn in government hospitals, beginning September 15, 2026, on Annadurai's birth anniversary, as per The Moneycontrol news report.
The 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam' will provide newborns in government hospitals with a 1-gram gold ring, valued at ₹13,600. This scheme celebrates newborns in alignment with the cultural practice of gifting by the maternal uncle.
The initiative was announced by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and aims to launch on September 15, marking the birth anniversary of Annadurai. A dedicated administrative body will implement and manage the scheme.
As per the report, approximately ₹755.83 crore has been earmarked annually for this initiative. About 7.8 lakh deliveries occur in the state annually, with 4.2 lakh taking place in government healthcare facilities.
Beneficiaries include residents of Tamil Nadu, and mothers delivering at government institutions must provide residential proof through accepted documents.

The scheme will be overseen by a state project management unit to ensure proper execution. All mothers giving birth in government hospitals will be eligible, provided they can verify residence in Tamil Nadu. This aligns with Chief Minister Vijay's election promise of gifting newborns a gold ring.
The 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam' involves an annual allocation of ₹755.83 crore and expects to distribute gold rings to approximately 4.2 lakh newborns annually. The government prioritises hospital deliveries, which constitute 53% of all births in Tamil Nadu.
