Starlink Poised for India Entry After Licence Approval

Elon Musk's Starlink is on the verge of launching its satellite internet services in India. The government has cleared its application for a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence, following weeks after issuing a Letter of Intent (LoI) to the company. This marks a significant breakthrough after Starlink's years-long wait for approval. 

This Marks a Big Win for Starlink  

Starlink has been seeking this crucial licence for the past three to four years. The green light comes now that the company has agreed to new conditions set by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and has paid the required fees.  

The issuance of this licence is a major hurdle overcome, especially as it also requires security clearances from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Indian government conducted a thorough review of Musk's satellite company and laid down strict security requirements. These include the necessity for Starlink to establish methods of interception and to set up a command-and-control centre within India. 

Next Steps for Starlink: IN-SPACe Approval and Spectrum Allocation 

Even after securing the GMPCS licence, Starlink will need further authorisation from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe). This body will issue the necessary approvals for Starlink's satellites to operate within Indian territory.  

In parallel, the government has begun the process of finalising the rules for allotting spectrum (radio waves) to satellite communication companies. This includes not only Starlink but also satellite communication ventures and investments from Indian telecom giants like Reliance Jio and Airtel, who are also keen to enter this space. 

As of 12:17 PM IST on June 4, 2025, Bharti Airtel share price was trading at ₹1,875.30, up ₹34.00 (1.85%) today, while Reliance Industries share price was at ₹1,412.00, up ₹6.50 (0.46%) today. 

On May 9, 2025, the telecom regulator TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) submitted its recommendations to the DoT regarding the allocation of spectrum and the charges companies will need to pay for using these airwaves.
