Southern Railway’s Chennai Division has reached a significant financial milestone, recording earnings of ₹5,038.30 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26. This achievement marks a 9% growth compared to the prior year. 

Chennai Division’s Impressive Financial Achievement 

In FY26, the division successfully generated ₹5,038.30 crore in total earnings, representing a 9% increase from the previous fiscal period. During this time, the division handled 432.98 million passengers and achieved a freight loading of 11.33 million tonnes, reflecting a 6% rise. 

Despite the dense traffic, the division maintained an 87% punctuality rate for Mail/Express trains, ensuring passenger satisfaction by operating 3,559 special trains and attaching 1,557 extra coaches during peak times. 

Ongoing Infrastructure Developments 

Shailendra Singh, Divisional Railway Manager, highlighted development efforts at the Kilambakkam Railway Station. The State government has allocated ₹21 crore to create a new halt station. Platform 1 is complete and work on Platforms 2 and 3 is nearing completion. 

The Chengalpattu–Arakkonam doubling project, estimated at ₹926.52 crore, aims to enhance capacity by doubling the existing single broad-gauge line over 67.79 km. Once completed, the line will support up to 50 trains per day.

Enhancements to Railway Line Capacity 

As part of capacity augmentation, a project to construct 3rd and 4th lines between Attipattu and Gummidipundi has been sanctioned at a cost of ₹365.42 crore. This plan includes new signalling systems, six major and 48 minor bridges, further boosting infrastructure capability.
