The Indian government’s Setubandha Vidwan Yojana empowers scholars of traditional Gurukul education to join top academic institutes like IITs without formal degrees. Under this scheme, selected individuals will receive up to ₹65,000 per month and additional yearly research grants to pursue studies in Indian knowledge systems.
Launched under the Ministry of Education, this scheme bridges ancient learning and modern research. Gurukul scholars who’ve completed at least 5 years at recognised institutions and showcase expertise in Sanskrit, Ayurveda, philosophy, mathematics or classical studies are eligible. Implemented by the Indian Knowledge System Division at Central Sanskrit University, the scheme offers two fellowship categories:
The programme encourages exploration in areas like Anvikshiki Vidya (philosophy and cognitive sciences), Ganit-Bhaut-Jyotish Vidya (mathematics, physics, astronomy), and Bhaishajya Vidya (Ayurveda). It aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 that promotes integrating India's civilisational wisdom into the formal education system.

The move acknowledges that deep knowledge is not always bound by degrees. By welcoming traditional scholars into institutions like IITs, the government is revitalising respect for India's ancient educational systems. With digital platforms like Diksha and PM eVidya already accessible to millions, this initiative furthers inclusivity and brings untapped knowledge into the research mainstream.
The Setubandha Vidwan Yojana is a landmark step towards blending tradition with innovation. It welcomes scholars rooted in India’s rich intellectual history, offering respectable fellowships and recognition through integration with modern institutions.
