The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Vikram Sahu as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Bank of America (BofA) in India. The confirmation was shared through an internal memo circulated by the US-headquartered bank to its employees, as reported by the Business Standard.
Sahu replaces Kaku Nakhate, who served as CEO for 15 years. While Sahu assumed the role of India country executive in June, his appointment as CEO was pending regulatory clearance until now.
Kaku Nakhate will now take on the role of Chair, India, focusing on strengthening relationships with key clients of the India franchise. Sahu will report to Jin Su, president of Asia Pacific, Bank of America.
Sahu has been guiding the country’s leadership team since June, concentrating on governance, regulatory matters, and client engagement. His leadership approach aligns with the bank’s responsible growth strategy.
As CEO, Sahu will chair Bank of America NA’s local management team while continuing as a member of the Asia Pacific Executive Committee. He will also remain chair of the India Country Leadership Team.
His responsibilities include overseeing the bank’s strategic growth plan and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The memo highlighted that Sahu will maintain focus on governance and operational efficiency across the India franchise.
Sahu brings over 25 years of experience in banking and financial services. He holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a master’s degree from the United States.
His career includes leadership roles in Hong Kong, the United States, and Europe, providing him with extensive global exposure. This experience positions him to drive Bank of America’s growth strategy in India effectively.
Kaku Nakhate joined Bank of America NA in June 2010 and has been instrumental in building the bank’s India operations over the past decade and a half. Before joining BofA, she worked at JP Morgan for a year and spent over 19 years at DSP Merrill Lynch Ltd.
In her new role as Chair, India Nakhate will continue to play a key part in client engagement and strategic initiatives for the bank.
