As 2025 draws to a close, Indian Railways reflects a year of remarkable progress and purposeful transformation. Advancing steadily toward its vision of a world-class railway network, Railways has focused on redefining comfort, connectivity, and sustainability. Building on the momentum of 2025, Indian Railways is poised to elevate the travel experience even further in 2026.

This year witnessed a major expansion of inclusive and modern travel options. After successfully extending comfortable travel to non-AC passengers through Amrit Bharat services, Indian Railways is preparing to usher in a new era of overnight journeys with the introduction of the first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper trains for AC travellers.

Faster, Safer and Comfortable Travel at Affordable Cost

Vande Bharat Trains

Vande Bharat trains remain a symbol of India’s rail modernisation drive.

  • As of 26 December 2025, 164 Vande Bharat services are operational across the Indian Railways network.
  • During calendar year 2025, 15 new Vande Bharat Express trains were introduced.
  • Looking ahead, the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper is set to redefine long-distance overnight travel by combining speed, comfort, and state-of-the-art amenities.

Amrit Bharat Trains

Designed to deliver high-quality travel for non-AC passengers, Amrit Bharat trains have expanded affordable comfort across the network.

  • Each service consists of 12 Sleeper Class and 8 General Class coaches, offering improved passenger amenities.
  • In 2025, 13 new Amrit Bharat Express trains were introduced.
  • Currently, 30 Amrit Bharat services are running nationwide.

Namo Bharat Rapid Rail

To strengthen short and medium-distance connectivity in high-demand corridors, Indian Railways introduced Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services.

  • These high-frequency services enhance regional mobility and reduce travel time.
  • Two Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services are operational between Bhuj–Ahmedabad and Jaynagar–Patna.

Infrastructure Expansion and Modernisation

Between 1 April and 30 November 2025, Indian Railways commissioned over 900 kilometres of new track lines. In parallel, extensive renewal of existing tracks has been undertaken to ensure safer operations, higher speeds, and improved passenger comfort.

Electrification: Powering a Greener Network

Railway electrification has progressed in mission mode, marking a historic milestone.

  • 99.2% of the Broad Gauge network has been electrified, with work ongoing on the remaining sections.
  • This achievement places Indian Railways ahead of many major rail systems globally.
  • 14 Railway Zones and 25 States/Union Territories have now achieved 100% electrification, reinforcing the Railways’ commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.

Project Commissioning in 2025 (Till Dec 28, 2025)

FY 2025–26 translated policy vision into tangible assets.

  • The Hon’ble Prime Minister dedicated 42 projects to the Nation,
  • Inaugurated 13 projects, and
  • Laid foundation stones for 21 projects, with a combined investment exceeding ₹25,000 crore.
