Railway Ministry Increases Speed Limit on Katra-Banihal Route to 100 kmph

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, The Railway Ministry has approved increasing the train speed limit to 100 kmph on the Katra-Banihal route, enhancing passenger convenience and connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir., as per The Economic Times news report
After satisfying all the safety conditions required by the railway authorities, the decision was made.
Train Speed Raised to 100 kmph
On the 111-km broad gauge section between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Banihal in Jammu Division the trains can reach the speeds of up to 100 kmph.
Earlier the speed limit were 85kmph on the Katra-Sangaldan section and 75 kmph on the Sangaldan-Banihal section. This improvement in speed follows strict adherence to prescribed safety protocols.
Less Travel Time and Safety
Due to the speed upgrade the travel time will be reduced for passengers and also it will set to make travel across the region significantly safer and more comfortable.
As Uchit Singhal, Jammu’s Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, points out, the ripple effects are what really matter. Better, more reliable connectivity is exactly what the region needs to spark real growth in local tourism, trade, and the broader economy.

In parallel, the Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia, virtually inaugurated the gauge-converted Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh.
The extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service up to Birpur is also set to offer direct rail connectivity, facilitating more affordable and convenient travel options.
