The data was released as the ministry outlined key figures related to its skill development programmes over the last 12 years.
According to the ministry, over 56.08 lakh apprentices have been engaged since 2016. The apprenticeship programme is to combine classroom learning with practical workplace experience and covers multiple sectors through participation from employers and training institutions.
The ministry noted that the number of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) has increased from 9,776 in 2014 to more than 13,888.
Apart from ITIs, skill training is provided through National Skill Training Institutes, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras and Jan Shikshan Sansthans located across different states.
The government has also established 3 Indian Institutes of Skills in Gandhinagar, Mumbai and Kanpur. These institutes offer training programmes linked to industry requirements and technical skills.
The ministry stated that the Skill India initiative has completed 12 years, during which several reforms and programmes have been introduced in the vocational training sector.
It added that coordination with state governments, educational institutions, and industry has formed part of the implementation of these initiatives.
