The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check Unit, established in November 2019, aims to combat the spread of fake news and misinformation related to the Government of India.

The unit invites the public to report any suspicious news via WhatsApp at +918799711259, email at factcheck@pib.gov.in, or through their website.

Role of the PIB Fact Check Unit

The PIB Fact Check Unit plays a crucial role in verifying news content related to the Government of India. It not only takes suo-moto cognizance of fact-checking but also receives complaints through its website and WhatsApp hotline. The unit assesses whether the information falls within its purview and verifies its authenticity through authorised sources.

Once verified, the unit employs an Information, Education & Communication (IEC) strategy to create awareness and disseminate accurate information on social media platforms. This ensures that the public receives authentic information, countering any misinformation effectively.

Operation Sindoor and Misinformation Management

During Operation Sindoor, the PIB Fact Check Unit actively countered misinformation and hostile narratives circulating online.

By promptly fact-checking false claims and providing authentic information, the unit ensured accurate public communication, helping prevent the spread of misleading and anti-India narratives.

Public participation is encouraged to help the PIB Fact Check Unit in its mission. By reporting suspected fake news, individuals contribute to maintaining the integrity of information related to the government.

The unit's efforts are supported by Dr L Murugan, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, who highlighted its significance in the Rajya Sabha.

Conclusion

The PIB Fact Check Unit is dedicated to ensuring that authentic information reaches the public, countering misinformation effectively. By inviting public participation, the unit strengthens its efforts to maintain the integrity of information related to the Government of India.
