A coalition of ride-hailing drivers across India has called for a nationwide strike on February 7, 2026, protesting against what they claim are arbitrarily set fares by platforms like Uber, Ola, and Rapido.

Strike Details and Demands

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union is spearheading the strike, dubbed "All India Breakdown." Drivers will go offline for six hours, demanding government intervention to enforce minimum base fares and stop the misuse of private vehicles for commercial rides.

Recent Unrest in the Gig Economy

This strike follows protests on December 31, 2025, when food delivery and quick commerce riders demonstrated against low pay and poor working conditions. The Economic Survey for 2025-26 highlighted that nearly 40% of gig workers earn less than ₹15,000 per month.

Growing Gig Workforce in India

The gig economy has expanded significantly, with the number of gig workers increasing by 55% to 1.2 crore in FY25 from 77 lakh in FY21. This growth is attributed to increased smartphone penetration and digital payment adoption. The sector now contributes over 2% of India's total workforce.

Conclusion

The upcoming strike highlights ongoing concerns regarding working conditions and income stability in India's rapidly growing gig economy. As the sector continues to expand with 1.2 crore workers, issues of fare regulation and worker welfare remain central points of contention.
