National Green Hydrogen Mission: Government Awards 12 Pilot Projects for 70 Hydrogen Vehicles Across India

India is stepping up its efforts to promote clean mobility through the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). As part of the initiative, the government has awarded 12 pilot projects to deploy hydrogen-powered buses and trucks across multiple states. The projects are aimed at assessing the commercial feasibility of hydrogen-powered transport while supporting India's broader goal of becoming a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

According to information shared by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in the Lok Sabha, the projects will deploy 70 hydrogen-powered vehicles, including Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs) and Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H₂-ICE) vehicles, along with 16 hydrogen refuelling stations across 21 routes in different states.

Government Allocates Over ₹410 Crore For Hydrogen Mobility Pilots

The government has earmarked ₹410.77 crore as financial assistance for the pilot projects, out of which ₹41.58 crore has already been released.

The projects have been awarded to several public and private sector entities, including NTPC, Tata Motors, Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), Reliance Industries (RIL), HPCL, NHPC, Volvo, EKA Mobility, KPIT Technologies, Waaree, and VECV.

The pilot routes span Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jharkhand. Overall, the programme will deploy 27 hydrogen-powered buses and 43 hydrogen-powered trucks, enabling real-world testing of hydrogen mobility solutions.

Pilot Projects to Evaluate Performance And Commercial Viability

The Ministry said the pilot projects include a structured monitoring and feedback mechanism. Agencies implementing the projects will regularly submit reports covering vehicle efficiency, hydrogen fuel consumption, utilisation, and safety performance.

The data collected will help the government assess the techno-economic viability of hydrogen-powered transportation and identify policy measures required to accelerate adoption.
