Ministry of MSME and DPIIT Sign MoU to Expand Global Market Access for Indian GI Products

India's Geographical Indication products are set to receive a coordinated push towards wider commercial markets following an MoU between the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), as per a PIB press release.
Signed on August 5, 2026, at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, the agreement brings together the two departments to strengthen the commercialisation and global market access of GI products.
From Regional Products to Global Markets
The collaboration aims to move GI products beyond localised crafts and towards scalable, commercially viable and export-ready enterprises.
The framework covers commercialisation, quality standardisation and market penetration while supporting the livelihoods of indigenous artisans, weavers and producers. It will also strengthen the One District One Product (ODOP) ecosystem.
'Bharat GI' to Enter ONDC and GeM
A dedicated "Bharat GI" banner will be used to facilitate the onboarding of GI collectives and authorised users onto the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
The 2 organisations will also integrate ODOP into programme interventions and co-sponsor dedicated GI Pavilions at national and international trade expos, buyer-seller meets and exhibitions.
Capacity Building and Digital Enablement
The partnership will focus on capacity building, digital enablement and improved market access for artisans, weavers, and producer collectives.
It also seeks to connect GI products with premium domestic and international markets while aligning intellectual property protection with enterprise development.
Roles of MSME and DPIIT
DPIIT is the nodal department for GI registration and legal protection in India, while the Ministry of MSME oversees the growth, financial health and development of MSMEs, traditional industries and artisans.
The MoU was signed by Md. Salik Parwaiz, Director, Ministry of MSME, and Karan Thapar, Director, IPR Division, DPIIT, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.
