Taiwan-headquartered semiconductor giant MediaTek has expressed its intent to begin manufacturing chips in India, once the country's fabrication infrastructure becomes operational. This aligns with India's semiconductor mission aimed at establishing self-reliant chipmaking capabilities supported by a $10-billion incentive package.

MediaTek Backs India’s Emerging Semiconductor Ecosystem

MediaTek, known for supplying chipsets to prominent global smartphone brands including Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, stated its readiness to manufacture semiconductors within India. The company follows a fabless model with focusing on chip design and software development, while outsourcing production to external foundries such as TSMC and Intel Foundry Services.

As per the reports of ToI, MediaTek India’s Managing Director, Anku Jain, emphasised the advantages of aligning manufacturing with consumption. The Indian electronics and smartphone markets are among the largest globally, making the idea of domestic production both strategic and cost-efficient.

India’s US$10-Billion Incentive Package

India has rolled out an ambitious semiconductor incentive programme worth a $10-billion incentive package to attract global chipmakers to establish local facilities. With over 10 major projects dedicated to chip design, testing and fabrication underway, the country is moving quickly to reduce its import dependency in the electronics segment.

Currently, India imports the vast majority of its semiconductors, despite its growing role as a global hub for consumer electronics and automotive electronics.

Strategic Alignment with 'Make in India' Vision

MediaTek’s move resonates with India’s 'Make in India' initiative. Local chip production would offer advantages like a shortened supply chain, resilience against global disruptions, faster delivery cycles and cost control. It also provides an opportunity to deepen research and development in India’s fast-growing technology sector.

India as a Strategic Innovation and Manufacturing Hub

For MediaTek, India represents not just a manufacturing opportunity but a future innovation centre. As the electronics ecosystem matures, it could support advanced semiconductor research, chip design and even future fabrication. India’s potential as both a consumption and innovation base offers long-term commercial benefits to global technology companies.

Conclusion

MediaTek's expression of interest in manufacturing chips in India marks a significant endorsement of the country's semiconductor ambitions. With a strong consumption base, government incentives and a maturing tech ecosystem, India is steadily positioning itself as a strategic destination for global chipmakers.
