The Maharashtra Cabinet Infrastructure Committee has approved a Metro corridor connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), as per PTI report.
The 35-km Metro Line 8 project is estimated to cost ₹22,862 crore. Land acquisition covering 30.7 hectares is expected to cost ₹388 crore, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.
The corridor will include 20 stations, with 6 underground and 14 elevated stops. About 9.25 km of the route, from Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 to Ghatkopar East, will be underground, while roughly 24.63 km from Ghatkopar West to Navi Mumbai Airport Terminal 2 will be elevated.
The alignment is planned to pass through areas such as Kurla, Mankhurd, Vashi, Nerul and Belapur.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed that land acquisition and statutory approvals be completed within 6 months.
Construction is to be completed within 3 years after approvals are granted. Departments have been asked to coordinate to prevent delays in execution.
Interchange hubs are planned at Mankhurd, Vashi and Belapur, linking the corridor with suburban rail and existing Metro lines.
Travel time between the 2 airports is expected to be around 35 to 45 minutes, subject to final operational design and station stops.
The cabinet committee also approved a 66.15-km ring road for Nashik city, with an estimated cost of ₹3,954 crore. In Gadchiroli district, the 85.76-km Navegaon More-Konsari-Mulchera-Hedri-Surjagad highway will be upgraded to a four-lane cement concrete road for mineral transport.
Extensions of the Samruddhi Expressway on the Nagpur-Gondia and Bhandara-Gadchiroli routes are to be expedited.
