The Ladakh administration has increased wages for daily wagers and part-time workers engaged in government departments. The decision was announced on Sunday by Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, as per news reports.
Under the revised structure, unskilled workers will receive ₹450 per day, while skilled workers will be paid ₹575 per day on a pro-rata basis. Earlier, many workers were reportedly receiving between ₹300 and ₹500 per month for similar work.
The revised wages will apply to workers such as sweepers, cleaners, gardeners, and other need-based staff employed in different government offices.
The administration said these workers have been handling support services across the Union Territory for several years.
Reportedly, officials have been directed to complete verification of eligible workers within 20 days and revise their wages accordingly.
The administration stated that the revision was aimed at bringing payments closer to provisions under the Minimum Wages Act.
The wage revision comes ahead of a scheduled meeting between the Ministry of Home Affairs and representatives of the Apex Body Leh (ABL) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) in New Delhi on May 22.
The 2 groups have been seeking statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. The meeting is expected to discuss these demands.
ABL leader Chhering Dorjay Lakruk said the administration should also consider regularising workers who have been associated with departments for a long period. He said the revised wages may still not be enough to meet living expenses in the region.
Lakruk also said that ABL and KDA had not received a formal agenda or invitation from the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the May 22 meeting.
