January 24 Marks National Girl Child Day: Celebrating Empowerment and Equality For Girls

National Girl Child Day is celebrated annually on January 24 to promote awareness of girls’ rights, equality, and empowerment. Initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008, the day coincides with the anniversary of the launch of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, which began on January 22, 2015, in Panipat, Haryana.

The scheme aims to address declining child sex ratios (CSR), gender inequality, and challenges like child marriage, barriers to education, and gender-based violence. Over the years, National Girl Child Day has become a platform to highlight these issues while fostering a more inclusive and equitable society for girls.

Significance of National Girl Child Day

This observance underscores the importance of nurturing and supporting girl children by ensuring their access to health, education, and overall well-being. The day focuses on combating gender-based prejudice and promoting opportunities for girls to flourish, realize their dreams, and contribute meaningfully to society. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao: Transforming Perspectives on the Girl Child

Launched as a tri-ministerial effort by the Ministries of Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare, and Human Resource Development, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao seeks to create a transformative shift in societal attitudes towards the girl child. Key elements of the scheme include:

• Enforcement of the PC & PNDT Act to prevent sex-selective abortions.
• Nation-wide awareness campaigns and advocacy to change mindsets.
• Multi-sectoral actions in select 100 districts with low CSRs in the first phase.

Prime Minister Modi’s Mann Ki Baat highlighted the success of initiatives like the “Selfie with Daughter” campaign, which became a global movement celebrating daughters. Districts across India have also adopted innovative measures to implement the scheme effectively.

On-the-Ground Impact: District-Level Initiatives

District administrations have taken various steps to operationalise BBBP. For example:

• Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand: Awareness rallies, street plays, and campaigns involving schools, government employees, and army personnel have spread the message of protecting and educating girls. These efforts include portraying the challenges faced by girls through story-driven street plays and signature campaigns.
• Mansa, Punjab: The district’s Udaan initiative allows girls from Classes VI-XII to spend a day with professionals like doctors, engineers, and IAS officers. Over 70 students have already participated, gaining valuable career insights.

Capacity-Building and Outreach Efforts

Since the launch of BBBP, multi-sectoral district action plans have been operationalised in most states, with extensive training provided to district officials and frontline workers. The Ministry of Women and Child Development has organised nationwide training sessions to strengthen capacities. In addition, awareness campaigns like pledge ceremonies and street plays continue to amplify the scheme’s message.
