The government has approved 12 more projects under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). These projects involve fresh investments of ₹7,503 crore and take the total number of approved applications to 118.

With the latest approvals, companies have committed to investing ₹77,051 crore under the scheme. This is nearly 30% higher than the original target of ₹59,350 crore.

Copper Foil Project Gets Biggest Investment

The largest investment among the newly approved projects is a ₹3,546 crore copper foil manufacturing facility planned by Indo Asia Copper Ltd in Amreli, Gujarat.

The 12 projects cover different parts of the electronics supply chain, including anode and cathode materials, printed circuit boards, capital goods, polypropylene film, heat sinks, specialty ceramics, relays and camera rims.

Tamil Nadu has received four projects, while Gujarat and Maharashtra have two each. Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka account for one project apiece.

Production Target Also Moves Higher

The government has raised its projected production under the scheme to ₹5.73 lakh crore, against the original target of ₹4.56 lakh crore. That is an increase of nearly 26%.

IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the scheme's employment target of 91,600 people was also close to being achieved.

The incentives are linked to company turnover, with government support dependent on the businesses starting production.

Focus on Manufacturing Equipment in India

The government is also looking to build domestic capacity in machinery used to manufacture electronic components. India still depends on overseas suppliers for much of this equipment.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said attracting global equipment makers would be difficult, but the government wants to develop these capabilities in India and move deeper into the electronics supply chain.

Conclusion

The latest approvals take investment commitments under ECMS well beyond the original target. The projects also cover a wider range of components, as the government looks to strengthen electronics manufacturing within the country.
