Indian Railways Upgrades KAVACH to Version 4.0 Across 108 RKM on South Central Railway

Indian Railways has commissioned KAVACH Version 4.0 on South Central Railway (SCR) for the first time, as per a PIB report. The new version has been commissioned over 108 Route Kilometres (RKM) on the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section of Hyderabad Division. 

The work involved upgrading the existing KAVACH system from Version 3.2 to Version 4.0. Before this upgrade, Version 3.2 had been deployed across 1,465 RKM on South Central Railway. 

Changes in KAVACH 4.0 

KAVACH 4.0 is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. The latest version includes changes based on the experience of using Version 3.2 on the railway network. 

The system has improved location accuracy for trains and provides more information on signal aspects in larger yards. It also has a station-to-station interface using Optical Fibre Cable (OFC). 

Another change is the ability to interface directly with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems. These systems form part of the signalling infrastructure used at railway stations and sections. 

Train Protection Features 

KAVACH is to help Loco Pilots keep trains within prescribed speed limits. If the Loco Pilot does not take the required action, the system can automatically apply the brakes. 

The system is also designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) and control train speed in critical situations. It is intended to reduce the risk of collisions and support train operations during inclement weather. 

Infrastructure Needed 

KAVACH deployment requires equipment across the railway section. This includes Station KAVACH at stations and block sections, RFID tags along the track and telecommunication towers. 

Optical Fibre Cable is laid along the railway section, while Loco KAVACH equipment is installed on locomotives operating on the network. The safety system requires Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4) certification.

Conclusion 

The commissioning of Version 4.0 on the 108 RKM section follows SCR's earlier experience with Version 3.2. Indian Railways has planned large-scale deployment of KAVACH 4.0 across its network, with the newer version incorporating changes to positioning, signalling and system communication.
