Indian Railways to Launch Door-to-Door Parcel Services in 8 Major Cities via Rail Parcel App for Easy Bookings

Indian Railways is all set to commence a door-to-door parcel service covering 8 major cities, employing the Rail Parcel App for seamless booking, as per the Economic Times news report.  

This new initiative is designed to enhance service offerings by allowing users to book pickups and deliveries online, thereby simplifying logistics processes. 

Introduction of the Rail Parcel App for Seamless Service 

The Indian Railways will unveil a door-to-door parcel service through its Rail Parcel App, Ghar se Ghar Tak, in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune.  

With logistics partners managing initial pickups and final deliveries, the railways will focus on transporting parcels between stations. Customers can enjoy the convenience of booking services online, mitigating the need for physical visits to railway premises.  

Additionally, refunds for cancellations are offered under specified conditions, with the complete rail freight refundable if cancellations occur before consignment collection. 

New Booking and Refund Policies 

The customers will have a 15-day advance window to book parcel deliveries before the scheduled train departures. Booking is possible until 1 day before departure, while logistics partners need to hand over parcels to railway staff up to an hour before the train departs. 

Refunds are facilitated through a clerkage charge of ₹10 for rail freight cancellations made prior to pickup. Refund terms for logistic services depend on specific policies communicated at booking. 

Special Offers and Discounts 

This initiative succeeds a series of discounts the Railway Board announced for parcel services, particularly ahead of festive seasons like Diwali and Christmas.  

Through a round-trip booking offer, parcel aggregators could avail of a reduced combined freight charge by 25%, costing 1.5 times the one-way fare for round-trip bookings.

The Rail Parcel App serves as a digital marketplace, linking customers with logistics providers offering various services, including packaging. This innovation aims to eliminate cumbersome paperwork and facilitate a user-friendly booking and payment system online.
