When luggage is stolen during a rail journey, Indian Railways provides clear channels for passengers to report the incident without interrupting their travel plans.

Contact Points for Luggage Theft on Trains

The Ministry of Railways advises that passengers should first approach the train conductor, coach attendants, guards or any GRP/RPF officer present on the carriage.

These officials issue an FIR form which the passenger fills and returns. The completed form is then forwarded to the relevant police station for action. This process eliminates the need to disembark solely to lodge a police report.

Using the RailMadad App and Helpline 139

RailMadad, the official mobile application, allows users to register a complaint in real time. The app integrates with the 24 × 7 helpline 139, which is linked to the national emergency number 112. Passengers can submit details of the theft, upload photos and receive a reference number for follow‑up.

Assistance at RPF Posts and Station Counters

At major railway stations, RPF Assistance Posts are available to help passengers complete FIR paperwork. If the incident occurs near a station, passengers may also visit the station’s RPF counter for direct support.

The Railway Protection Force works alongside State Government GRP units to ensure coordinated security measures across all routes.

Conclusion

Passengers experiencing luggage theft can rely on on‑board staff, the RailMadad platform, helpline 139 and RPF assistance posts to file complaints promptly, ensuring that travel is not disrupted while the matter is investigated.
