Indian Railways Approves Projects Worth ₹736 Crore to Enhance Safety and Infrastructure

As per PTI news report, Indian Railways has sanctioned various projects aimed at improving safety and infrastructure across several divisions at an expenditure of ₹736 crore. This includes the rollout of the Kavach 4.0 system and installation of Electronic Interlocking (EI). 

Major Highlights of Railway Infrastructure Enhancement 

Indian Railways, on September 20, 2026, greenlit multiple projects targeting increased safety and better infrastructure.  

Among these, Kavach Version 4.0, an automatic train protection system, is set for rollout across 607.7 route kilometres in the Lucknow Division, costing ₹252 crore.  

Kavach is designed to prevent signal overshoots and automatically apply brakes. Additionally, it will support safer train operations. 

Installation of Electronic Interlocking Systems 

In a commitment to modernising its signalling infrastructure, the Railway Ministry sanctioned Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems at seven stations within the Solapur Division.  

This improvement will facilitate the operation of the Kavach system while enhancing overall signalling capabilities at a cost of ₹209 crore. 

Enhancements to Electric Traction Systems 

The ministry plans to upgrade the electric traction system from 1x25 kV to 2x25 kV over the Savalyapuram-Guntur section in the South Coast Railway. This undertaking involves an investment of ₹142 crore, covering 146 track kilometres, aiming to better support electric train operations. 

Road Over Bridge Construction at Udhna-Ukai Songadh 

A four-lane road over bridge (ROB) is slated for construction at Level Crossing No. 53 on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section. This project, with a total costing of ₹133.23 crore, will be co-funded by the state government, aiming to ease road traffic and minimise railway operation disturbances.

Approval Summary and Financial Allocations 

The aggregate cost of these projects stands at ₹736 crore, focusing on enhancing rail operations and passenger safety. The strategic initiatives underline the commitment to integrating advanced technology and improving infrastructure efficiency.
