Indian Government Urges Automakers to Enhance Highway EV Charging Infrastructure

The Indian government is focusing on improving the country's highway electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure by urging automakers to play a more significant role in expanding and maintaining the network., as per the Times of India news report.  

This comes as nearly 50% of the mapped charging stations are reported non-functional. 

Government's Directive to Automakers 

At Siam's annual session, Kamran Rizvi, secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, emphasized the need for automakers to address the deficiencies in India's EV charging network.  

The ministry has pinpointed 60 priority corridors for electrification and has shared this list with Siam. Rizvi suggested that automakers could collaborate and allocate these corridors among themselves to establish functional charging infrastructure. 

Focus on Highway Charging Infrastructure 

The government plans to prioritise highway charging stations over the next 2 to 3 years. This initiative coincides with the government's decision to gradually reduce direct subsidies for electric vehicle purchases, thereby expecting automakers to bolster the supporting ecosystem.  

Rizvi cites electric 3-wheelers as a segment where growth is robust without heavy reliance on subsidies. 

Financial Support for Charging Infrastructure 

The Ministry of Heavy Industries has set aside a ₹2,000 crore fund for charging infrastructure development. This fund could be accessed by automakers to develop charging stations.  

Additionally, charging depots are planned for 160 cities to aid in the electrification of buses.

Automakers' Role in Maintaining Stations 

The ministry expects automakers not only to install charging stations but ensure their functionality and reliability.  

Rizvi highlighted that establishing charging infrastructure is less complex than conventional fuel stations, as it doesn't require a complex supply chain.
