India's wheat procurement for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season has crossed 35 million tonnes (MT), registering a strong increase from the previous year, as per PTI news report.

The procurement has not only exceeded the government's target but has also strengthened foodgrain stocks for public distribution and welfare programmes.

The procurement exercise has been carried out by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies at the minimum support price (MSP).

Procurement Surpasses Target

According to a senior food ministry official, wheat purchases have exceeded 35 MT so far during the current season, crossing the government's target of 34.5 MT.

The latest procurement figure represents a growth of around 17% compared with the 30 MT procured during the previous marketing season, reflecting improved arrivals and stronger participation by farmers.

Higher Output Supports Procurement

The increase in procurement was aided by a robust wheat harvest, with the agriculture ministry estimating production at 120.65 MT for the 2025-26 crop year.

Strong domestic output ensured ample market arrivals, while mandi prices in several regions remained below the MSP, encouraging farmers to sell their produce to government agencies.

The procurement performance remained resilient despite localised crop damage caused by unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms in certain regions.

Madhya Pradesh Leads Growth

Punjab remained the largest contributor with procurement of 12.1 MT, marginally higher than 11.9 MT recorded in the previous season.

Madhya Pradesh witnessed the sharpest increase, with procurement rising to 10.4 MT from 7.8 MT a year earlier. Haryana's procurement increased to 8.1 MT from 7 MT.

Uttar Pradesh nearly doubled its procurement to 1.7 MT from 1 MT, while Rajasthan recorded growth to 2.4 MT compared with 1.9 MT in the previous season.

Conclusion

India's wheat procurement has exceeded both the government's target and last year's levels, supported by strong production and healthy market arrivals. The higher procurement is expected to strengthen buffer stocks and support food security requirements in the coming months.
