India and the United States are actively engaged in discussions to finalise a trade deal, with the next call scheduled for January 13. The ongoing negotiations aim to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

Current Status of India-US Trade Negotiations

The US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, announced that the next call on trade between India and the US is set for January 13. Both countries are determined to reach an agreement, despite the complexities involved in negotiating with the world's largest nation, India.

Gor, a close aide of American President Donald Trump, has taken on a significant role in advancing strategic ties between New Delhi and Washington. His involvement is expected to elevate the partnership to a new level.

Challenges in Finalising the Trade Deal

Trade talks between India and the US have faced hurdles, with negotiations stalling around July last year. In August, the US imposed a 50% tariff on several Indian goods, including a 25% duty on India's purchases of Russian oil. These tariffs have added complexity to the discussions.

Efforts to Resolve Trade Impasse

Both nations have been working towards a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement and a limited framework deal to mitigate the impact of the tariffs on Indian exporters. Despite missing a 2025 deadline for the framework agreement, more than 6 rounds of negotiations have taken place.

Conclusion

India and the US remain committed to finalising a trade deal, with ongoing discussions and scheduled calls indicating progress. The complexities of the negotiations reflect the significant economic relationship between the two nations.
