India set to unveil its first hydrogen-powered train, joining global leaders in exploring hydrogen for rail transport. This new technology is expected to complement the electrified network, operating between Jind and Sonipat over a distance of 89 KM as per the PTI news report.

Hydrogen Power in Indian Railways

On July 17, 2026, India set to launch its inaugural hydrogen-powered train, offering emission-free travel. The train operates on a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel-cell system, converting hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, allowing it to reach speeds up to 75 km/h. Covering an 89 KM route between Jind and Sonipat, it stops at 12 stations.

Clean Energy Transition

This launch will mark another step in India's clean energy transition. Hydrogen fuel cells only emit water vapour, recognised for being free from pollutants like carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The introduction of this technology echoes similar international advancements in cleaner, low-emission transport.

Infrastructure and Safety Measures

The train incorporates an indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility in Jind. Hydrogen is compressed and stored in high-pressure tanks for onboard dispensing. The train and refuelling systems are equipped to detect hydrogen leaks or heat, featuring automatic shut-off systems for added safety.

Comparing Global Efforts

Following in the footsteps of countries like Germany, France, China, and the US, India is enhancing its rail system with hydrogen technology. Germany, for example, introduced its first commercial hydrogen train service in 2018.

Environmental Impact and Infrastructure

Currently, over 95% of India's broad-gauge railway is electrified. While hydrogen trains are not expected to replace the core network, they have a potential niche where electrification is impractical. Focusing on affordable green hydrogen production is crucial to maximising environmental benefits.

Conclusion

The launch of the hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat highlights India's progression in clean energy rail solutions. With a 1,200-kilowatt system offering emission-free travel, this development supports cleaner transport alternatives, joining other nations in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
