India’s Unemployment Rate Holds at 5% in September 2026

India's unemployment rate remained at 5% in September 2026, unchanged from August 2026, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey bulletin released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), as per news reports.
The headline figure showed little movement, but the monthly data recorded different trends across regions and genders. Unemployment edged up in both rural and urban India, while the rate for urban women saw a larger increase.
Urban Women's Unemployment Reaches 9.2%
The unemployment rate among women rose to 5.2% in September from 5.1% a month earlier. In urban areas, it climbed from 8.9% to 9.2%, while rural women's unemployment remained at 3.9%.
The overall rate for men stayed at 4.9%. Rural men's unemployment increased slightly to 4.4%, whereas the urban rate eased to 6% from 6.1%.
Labour Force Participation Slips Marginally
The labour force participation rate (LFPR), which measures the share of people working or actively seeking work, declined to 55.5% from 55.6% in August.
The rural rate moved up to 50.7% from 50.4%. Urban participation went the other way, slipping to 58% from 58.2%.
Worker Population Ratio Falls to 52.7%
The worker population ratio (WPR) decreased to 52.7% from 52.8% in August. Rural WPR fell to 55.5%, while the urban figure increased to 47.2%.
The gender split also differed. Women's WPR declined to 32.8% from 33%, while men's rate edged up to 73.6% from 73.5%.

Conclusion
September's 2026 figures left the overall unemployment rate unchanged, although the changes across gender and location show that the national figure does not tell the whole story of the labour market.
