India’s LPG Sales Falls 13% in April 2026 as Hormuz Closure Cuts Supply

India’s LPG sales declined 13% year-on-year in April as fuel supply disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz affected imports and domestic availability, as per news reports.
Oil ministry data showed lower sales across household, commercial, and industrial segments during the month. The decline was sharper in northern India, where overall LPG sales dropped 17% compared with April last year.
Household Consumption Declines
State-run oil marketing companies sold 1,982 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) of LPG to households in April, compared with 2,229 TMT in the same period last year. Household LPG supplies were down around 11% year-on-year.
India depends on imports for a large part of its LPG requirement. Supply movement was affected after tensions around the Strait of Hormuz disrupted shipping routes and delayed cargo availability.
Commercial Cylinder Sales Lower
Commercial LPG cylinder sales fell to 187 TMT in April from 208.5 TMT a year earlier, showing a decline of nearly 10%.
Commercial cylinders are used by hotels, restaurants, offices, hospitals, educational institutions, and industrial kitchens. Lower supplies during the month affected distribution in several markets.
Industrial Use Drops Sharply
Industrial LPG consumption recorded the steepest fall among all categories. Supplies to industrial consumers declined 82% year-on-year to 11.9 TMT in April.
Many factories shifted to alternatives such as fuel oil and natural gas after LPG supplies tightened. Over the past year, several industries had moved towards LPG because lower crude oil prices had made it relatively cheaper than natural gas.
Auto LPG Supplies Increase
Supplies to LPG-powered vehicles increased 86% year-on-year to 10.8 TMT during April. State-run fuel retailers raised supplies to compensate for lower availability from private auto LPG suppliers.
Direct LPG imports by private companies fell 44% year-on-year to 19.5 TMT during the month.
