India is set to take a major step towards zero-emission rail transport as preparations for the country’s first hydrogen-powered train reach their final stage, as per news reports.
The landmark project on the Jind–Sonepat route marks a shift away from diesel traction and strengthens India’s clean mobility ambitions.
The 89-km hydrogen-powered train route between Jind and Sonepat is expected to be operational soon as the dedicated green hydrogen plant in Jind enters its final commissioning phase.
The facility, built specifically for this project, is India’s largest hydrogen plant, with a storage capacity of 3,000 kilograms and round-the-clock operational capability.
To ensure uninterrupted hydrogen production, the Haryana government has guaranteed a stable 11 kV power supply to the plant. The facility is designed to operate continuously, making consistent and high-quality electricity critical for both commissioning and regular operations.
State Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi recently reviewed power supply arrangements with officials of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN).
He directed regular audits of the power infrastructure, emphasising the need for strong backup systems and rapid-response mechanisms to avoid technical disruptions.
Northern Railway has expressed satisfaction with the quality and reliability of the power supply, noting that uninterrupted energy availability is crucial during the final commissioning stage.

By replacing diesel engines with hydrogen fuel cells that emit only water vapour and heat, the Jind–Sonepat hydrogen train places India among global frontrunners such as Germany and China in clean rail technology. With power systems secured and commissioning nearing completion, the project signals a significant leap toward sustainable transportation and a lower-carbon railway network in India.
