India’s Direct Tax Collection Crosses ₹12 Lakh Crore As Net Receipts Rise 12.96% YoY

Net Direct Tax collection was ₹12.12 lakh crore between April 1 and September 17, 2026, up 12.96% from the same period last year, according to news reports citing data from the Income Tax Department released on September 18, 2026. 

Before refunds, the government collected ₹14.32 lakh crore in direct taxes. This was 15.19% higher than the ₹12.44 lakh crore collected in the year-ago period. 

Refunds and Advance Tax 

Refunds issued to taxpayers rose 29.19% year-on-year to ₹2.20 lakh crore. The higher refund amount was reflected in the difference between gross and net direct tax collection. 

Advance tax payments rose 16.18% to around ₹5.22 lakh crore. Companies paid more than ₹4.16 lakh crore in advance corporate tax, up 18% from a year earlier. 

Corporate Tax 

Net corporate tax collection rose to ₹5.56 lakh crore from ₹4.65 lakh crore last year. Gross corporate tax collection was ₹6.95 lakh crore, compared with ₹5.96 lakh crore in the corresponding period. 

Net non-corporate tax collection increased to ₹6.16 lakh crore from ₹5.81 lakh crore. Gross collection from the category rose to ₹6.98 lakh crore from ₹6.21 lakh crore. 

STT Collection 

Securities Transaction Tax (STT) collection rose to ₹40,214.36 crore from ₹26,305.72 crore a year earlier. The increase was about 53%. 

Non-corporate advance tax payments rose 9.24% to ₹1.06 lakh crore. The category includes tax paid by individuals, HUFs, firms, associations of persons, and other entities. 

Other Taxes 

Net collection under other taxes was negative at ₹0.20 crore, compared with ₹280.51 crore last year. Gross collection fell to ₹17.12 crore from ₹297.14 crore.

Conclusion 

Net direct tax collection reached ₹12.12 lakh crore by September 17. Corporate tax, advance tax, and STT collections were higher than in the same period last year, while refunds also increased.
