As per a PTI news report, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal noted that India is the world’s best location for setting up data centres and estimated that more than $200 billion could come into the industry.

He made the statement after a roundtable on ease of doing business for the data centre sector.

Meeting With Industry Stakeholders

The meeting was attended by data centre and hyperscaler companies, cloud providers, power producers and equipment suppliers.

Real estate and construction companies, global investors, private equity partners and state and central government representatives also took part.

The discussions covered regulations and digital infrastructure, with the focus on measures that could make it easier for companies to set up and operate data centres in India.

Participants included international investors and Indian companies looking to invest in the sector.

$200 Billion Investment Potential

Goyal said the data centre industry could see more than $200 billion coming into the sector. He said the government held the roundtable to discuss ways to promote the development of data centres and address issues related to doing business in the industry.

The minister said the growth of data centres would take place alongside developments in semiconductors, artificial intelligence and manufacturing. He identified these areas as important parts of India’s economic growth in the coming years.

Goyal said the development of these sectors would support India’s longer-term economic plans, including its target of reaching a $30 trillion economy by 2047.

He also said India’s digital capabilities, economic growth and investor-friendly ecosystem could help it become a preferred destination for data centre investments.

India-Germany Cooperation

Separately, Goyal met Carsten Schneider, Germany’s Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

The meeting covered cooperation in the circular economy, waste management, renewable energy, and clean technologies. The discussions also included sustainable solutions, green supply chains, and opportunities for skilled talent.

Goyal said both countries could work together on solutions that can be scaled up.
