Food Inflation Emerges as Key Pressure Point
The sharper movement came from food prices, with food inflation accelerating to 5.52% in July 2026 from 5.32% in June 2026, making food prices the key factor behind the slightly higher-than-expected headline inflation reading.
Rural and Urban Inflation Move Higher
Rural inflation increased to 4.84% from 4.74% in June, while urban inflation rose more modestly to 3.96% from 3.93%.
The increase across both segments indicates that the upward movement in headline inflation was not limited to either rural or urban consumers.
Housing and Clothing Inflation Rise
Housing inflation edged up to 2.22% from 2.10% in June, while inflation in clothing and footwear increased to 3.38% from 3.23%.
Inflation in restaurant and accommodation services also recorded a sharper increase, rising to 7.72% from 6.91% in the previous month.
Some Inflation Categories Ease
Several categories recorded moderation during July 2026. Health inflation declined to 1.34% from 1.42%, while inflation in personal care, social production and miscellaneous goods eased to 14.77% from 16.72%.
