On July 2, 2026, following a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, India and Japan announced a series of initiatives aimed at boosting ties across economic and defence sectors as per The PTI news report.

This includes an economic partnership framework and a defence pact for joint military hardware development, as part of their plan to bolster cooperation in essential areas like energy and critical technology.

Strategic Economic and Defence Initiatives

The discussions resulted in a joint roadmap designed to enhance economic security, focusing on supply chain resilience in strategic fields such as semiconductors, quantum technology, and advanced materials.

PM Modi highlighted the complementary nature of the Indian and Japanese economies, with shared cultural values and modern technological strengths creating a strong basis for collaboration. The defence pact aims to co-develop military equipment, marking a crucial step forward in bilateral military cooperation.

Key Sector Collaborations

In energy security, the India-Japan bio-gas initiative is set to establish 1,000 bio-gas and organic fertiliser plants across India. This project is expected to contribute to sustainability and improve rural livelihoods by providing new avenues for village prosperity.

Over 70 dialogue mechanisms now constitute the bilateral framework, further strengthening their ties. Modi's visit to Japan for the 15th Annual Summit in Tokyo the previous year underscores the ongoing commitment to this partnership.
