India has announced an increase in windfall taxes on the export of diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) in response to the surge in global oil prices, as per The Reuters news report.

This decision comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran, which have impacted the global oil market.

Details of the Tax Increase

The government has raised the duty on diesel exports to ₹15.5 per litre, up from ₹8.5 per litre. Similarly, the tax on ATF exports has increased to ₹14.5 per litre from ₹7.5 per litre. These new rates are set to be implemented from July 16, 2026, as per the government order.

At the same time, the export duty on petrol has been reduced to ₹2.5 per litre from ₹4 per litre.

Impact of Global Oil Price Surge

The escalation of the US-Iran conflict has led to a rise in global oil prices, prompting India to adjust its export duties on diesel and ATF. This measure aims to address the financial implications of the oil price surge on the domestic economy.
