India imported 13.39 lakh tonnes of edible oils in May 2026, up 6.7% from 12.55 lakh tonnes in the same month last year, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA), as per PTI news report.
The increase was mainly supported by higher imports of crude soybean oil, which rose to 4,93,854 tonnes from 3,98,585 tonnes a year ago.
Total vegetable oil imports, which include edible and non-edible oils, stood at 13.65 lakh tonnes in May, compared with 12.67 lakh tonnes in May 2025, registering an 8% increase. Non-edible oil imports also rose to 26,202 tonnes from 12,040 tonnes during the same period.
Between November 2025 and May 2026, India's total vegetable oil imports reached 93.65 lakh tonnes, up from 83.39 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous oil year.
Edible oil imports during these 7 months increased to 92.17 lakh tonnes from 81.31 lakh tonnes, while non-edible oil imports declined to 1,47,710 tonnes from 2,07,505 tonnes.
SEA said the higher imports of crude soybean oil were linked to a narrower price difference with palm oil. The association also noted that no RBD Palmolein imports were recorded during May 2026.
Cumulative imports of RBD Palmolein during the first 7 months of the current oil year fell to 47,270 tonnes from 8,26,800 tonnes a year earlier.
The share of refined oils in total imports declined to 3% from 16% in the previous year, while crude oils accounted for 97% of imports.
SEA also said refined oil imports from Nepal continued under the duty-free provisions available under the SAFTA agreement.
