As per ANI report, India’s telecom sector has reached a significant global milestone, with the country now ranking 2nd worldwide in terms of 5G subscribers, trailing only China, says Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The achievement underscores the speed, scale and depth of India’s digital infrastructure expansion since the launch of 5G services.

400 Million Users Mark India’s Rapid 5G Adoption

India has crossed the 400 million 5G user mark, placing it among the fastest-growing 5G markets globally.

Since commercial rollout began in 2022, adoption has accelerated rapidly, supported by aggressive network deployment and rising data consumption across consumer and enterprise segments.

Network Expansion Delivers Nationwide Coverage

5G services are now available across almost the entire country, with network coverage extending to nearly all districts and reaching around 85% of the population.

Telecom operators have installed approximately 4.69 lakh 5G base transceiver stations, making India’s rollout one of the fastest globally in terms of scale and speed.

Rural Connectivity and Internet Penetration Strengthen Growth

Alongside 5G expansion, rural connectivity has seen strong momentum, with rural telephone connections growing at nearly twice the pace of urban areas over the past decade.

Total internet connections in India have crossed the 100-crore mark, reflecting a sharp rise from levels seen in 2014 and reinforcing the role of telecom infrastructure in enabling digital inclusion.

Indigenous Technology and Next-Generation Readiness

India has also advanced its push for technology self-reliance, becoming one of a handful of countries to develop an indigenous 4G network stack that can be upgraded to 5G.

Progress is also being made on next-generation technologies, with domestic research efforts underway under the Bharat 6G Mission to prepare for future telecom standards.

Conclusion

India’s emergence as the world’s second-largest 5G market highlights the strength of its digital transformation agenda. With widespread coverage, rising user adoption and growing reliance on home-grown technology, the telecom sector is positioned as a key driver of India’s long-term digital and economic growth.
