India and Mauritius Strengthen Ties with Deals in Healthcare and Energy

India and Mauritius signed seven agreements in Varanasi to expand cooperation in healthcare, energy, education, maritime security, and infrastructure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi on Thursday, as per news reports. The meeting resulted in the signing of seven memorandums of understanding (MoUs) across education, healthcare, energy, space, and maritime areas.

Special Package Announced

India announced a special economic package valued at about $680 million for Mauritius. The package includes projects such as new schools, hospitals, port and airport upgrades, and road expansion. At least 10 development projects are expected to be implemented under this plan.

Key MoUs Signed

The agreements covered science and technology cooperation, oceanography research, and training for public service officials. Other MoUs were signed on energy development, small development projects, hydrography, and space collaboration. The space pact includes setting up a satellite tracking and communication station.

Energy Projects

A proposal for a 17.5 megawatt floating solar photovoltaic project at Tamarind Falls was agreed upon. A team from NTPC Ltd will visit Mauritius to complete arrangements with the Central Electricity Board. India has also provided electric buses to Mauritius, with 10 out of 100 already delivered.

Education and Training

More than 5,000 Mauritian citizens have taken part in training programs in India. A new Directorate of Science and Technology will be set up in Mauritius. Cooperation agreements have been signed between IIT Madras, the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, and the University of Mauritius.

Maritime Cooperation

India and Mauritius renewed a 5-year agreement on hydrography, including joint surveys of the Exclusive Economic Zone and navigation charting. Training of Mauritian officers and maintenance of coast guard ships will continue under the pact.

Healthcare and Infrastructure

India will help establish the first Jan Aushadhi Kendra outside its borders in Mauritius. Other projects include an AYUSH Centre of Excellence, a veterinary school and hospital, and a new air traffic control tower at SSR International Airport.

The agreements broaden cooperation between India and Mauritius in multiple sectors, with focus areas including energy, education, healthcare, and maritime development.
