India and Finland have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding on environmental cooperation, expanding bilateral engagement in areas such as pollution prevention, waste management and climate action, as per news reports.

The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration through the exchange of technology, knowledge and environmental best practices.

Areas of Bilateral Cooperation

The renewed pact will facilitate cooperation in air and water pollution prevention, soil remediation and waste management, including hazardous waste handling, recycling and waste-to-energy initiatives.

It will also support work related to circular economy approaches, low-carbon resource use and sustainable forest management.

Beyond these areas, the partnership will also focus on climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental and forest monitoring systems, data management and conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems.

Integrated water resource management is another key component of the framework aimed at improving sustainable use of natural resources.

Leadership Statements and Context

The renewal took place during the four-day visit of Finnish President Alexander Stubb to India. Commenting on the development, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted that India has renewed the environmental cooperation agreement to deepen collaboration on several key areas.

The statement emphasised “deepening cooperation on pollution prevention and control, waste management, climate change, forests and natural resource management through knowledge and technology cooperation.”
