India and Belgium Sign Defence MoUs and Contracts, Discuss Maritime Security in Indo-Pacific

India and Belgium signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and contracts related to defence-industrial cooperation on Thursday, as per a Business Standard news report.  

The agreements were signed during a meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Belgium’s Minister of Defence and Foreign Trade Theo Francken in New Delhi. 

The Ministry of Defence did not immediately release details of the agreements. Singh said in a post on X that the agreements were signed to combine Belgian technology with Indian skills and scale. 

Talks on Defence Cooperation 

Singh and Francken reviewed defence and industrial cooperation between the two countries during their meeting. They also discussed ways to continue defence engagement through defence-cooperation dialogue, high-level visits, training, and capacity-building. 

The ministry did not give details of the contracts or MoUs. Their financial value, the parties involved and the specific areas covered by the agreements were not mentioned in the statement issued after the meeting. 

Maritime Security Discussed 

The ministers also discussed regional peace and security. The two sides acknowledged the need for maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, according to the Ministry of Defence. 

No details were given on any specific maritime security project or agreement. The issue was discussed as part of the wider talks on defence cooperation between India and Belgium. 

Francken Part of Belgian Delegation 

Francken is part of the Belgian delegation accompanying Prime Minister Bart De Wever during his India visit. De Wever is visiting India from September 2 to 4. 

The meeting with Singh took place during the Belgian prime minister’s visit. Defence and industrial cooperation were among the issues discussed as part of the bilateral engagement. 

Current Defence Engagement 

The two countries are expected to continue their engagement through defence dialogue, official visits, training and capacity-building. These areas were included in the discussions between Singh and Francken. 

The Ministry of Defence has so far not provided further information on the newly signed MoUs and contracts. Details on the scope and value of the agreements therefore remain unavailable.
