
India has achieved a significant milestone in its civil nuclear energy programme with the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor attaining criticality. The development marks the initiation of a sustained nuclear fission chain reaction at the Kalpakkam facility in Tamil Nadu.
The milestone was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted its importance in advancing the country’s nuclear roadmap. The achievement represents progress in India’s long-term strategy to strengthen energy security through advanced nuclear technologies.
The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam has reached criticality, marking a key operational milestone. Criticality refers to the point at which a nuclear reactor sustains a controlled chain reaction.
This step indicates that the reactor systems are functioning as designed under monitored conditions. It brings the project closer to full-scale commercial operation following regulatory approvals.
The PFBR is a 500 MW electric sodium-cooled fast breeder reactor developed under India’s advanced nuclear programme. It has been designed and operated by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited under the Department of Atomic Energy.
The reactor is located at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research campus. The project has involved over 20 years of development, addressing complex engineering and materials challenges.
Fast breeder reactors differ from conventional nuclear reactors in fuel utilisation and output. While traditional reactors primarily use uranium, breeder reactors use plutonium and generate additional fissile material.
The PFBR is designed to convert uranium-238 into plutonium-239, enhancing fuel efficiency. This capability supports India’s long-term plan to utilise its thorium reserves in later stages of the nuclear programme.
Fast breeder reactor technology remains limited globally due to high costs and technical complexity. Currently, Russia is among the few nations operating a commercial fast breeder reactor.
Several countries have discontinued similar programmes due to safety and economic challenges. India’s progress in this domain reflects its focus on developing advanced and self-reliant nuclear capabilities.
