The central government is intensifying efforts to expand the National Gas Grid to improve energy accessibility, affordability, and sustainability across the country. The initiative aims to provide households, industries, and businesses with a reliable and cleaner fuel source while supporting the government’s environmental and economic objectives.

Current Gas Pipeline Network

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved approximately 34,233 km of natural gas pipelines across India. Out of this, 25,429 km are already operational, and around 10,459 km are under construction at various stages. The authorised network includes common carrier pipelines, spur lines, dedicated pipelines, and connectivity links, ensuring a wide distribution of natural gas across regions.

Measures to Boost the Gas Grid

The government has implemented several measures to accelerate the ‘One Nation, One Gas Grid’ vision. These include:

  • Approval of major trunk pipeline projects
  • Viability gap funding for low-demand areas
  • A unified tariff structure
  • Expansion of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network
  • Establishment of new LNG terminals
  • Marketing and pricing freedom for gas from deep-water, ultra-deep-water, and HP/HT fields
  • Promotion of Bio-CNG under the SATAT initiative

Close collaboration with state governments and implementing agencies aims to resolve bottlenecks and ensure timely pipeline construction.

Benefits for Households and Industries

The expanded gas network is expected to deliver significant advantages:

  • Increased use of CNG and PNG in urban areas, promoting cleaner domestic fuel consumption and sustainable mobility
  • Assured availability of natural gas in industrial clusters, reducing operational costs and attracting investments
  • Support for manufacturing growth and creation of new employment opportunities

By providing clean and affordable energy, the gas grid expansion aligns economic growth with environmental sustainability.

Environmental Impact

Expanding the National Gas Grid reduces dependence on traditional fossil fuels, helping lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. Greater adoption of natural gas and Bio-CNG will contribute to cleaner cities and a more sustainable energy ecosystem.

Conclusion

The National Gas Grid expansion is a major step toward energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in India. By increasing natural gas access for households and industries, the government is supporting cleaner fuel usage, cost-effective industrial operations, and job creation. The initiative demonstrates a long-term strategy to balance energy needs with environmental responsibility.
